FOR NATURE LOVERS
The Haw River
The 110-mile Haw River runs through sections of Alamance and five other counties in North Carolina, eventually joining with the Deep River to form the Cape Fear River. Five of the six dams on the river were built in the 1800s to provide hydropower for the once-thriving industry of textile mills. Today, many portions of the river are home to wildlife, and also provide great spots for water recreation.
The Haw River is environmentally monitored by the Haw River Assembly, a non-profit citizens’ group who since 1982 has been dedicated to restoring and protecting the river and building a watershed community. The Assembly provides environmental education, conservation and pollution prevention.
www.thehaw.org - Haw River Trail – an area partnership involved in development of the Haw River Trail and the conservation of its land and waters. The Haw River Land Trail is a 70-mile trail following the path of the Haw River from Haw River State Park to Jordan Lake Recreation Area. The Paddle Trail is an opportunity for paddlers - from beginner to expert – to enjoy the natural beauty of the Haw River and surrounding area. For rentals, equipment and instruction, there are plenty of Outfitters in the area: Haw River Canoe and Kayak in Saxapahaw (hawrivercanoe.com), River Run Outfitters (iriverrun.com), Haw River Outfitters in Burlington (hawriveroutfitters.com), Get Outdoors in Greensboro (shopgetoutdoors.com), and REI in Durham (rei.com).
